What Is an Internet Speed Test?

An internet speed test measures how quickly data travels between your device and a test server on the internet. Instead of trusting the number printed on your broadband contract, a speed test shows what your connection actually delivers right now, on this device, in this room.

Every internet connection test on this page reports four values:

  • Download speed: how fast data arrives at your device. This is the number that decides how smoothly video streams and how quickly pages and files load.
  • Upload speed: how fast data leaves your device, which matters for video calls, cloud backups and sending large attachments.
  • Ping (latency): the delay before the first byte of a response comes back, measured in milliseconds.
  • Jitter: how much that delay varies from one moment to the next.

How This Speed Test Works

The test runs entirely in your browser using real network transfers, not estimates. First it sends a series of very small requests to the test server and times each round trip to calculate minimum latency, average ping and jitter. It then opens several parallel connections and downloads real data for a few seconds, counting the bytes as they arrive. Finally it generates random data in your browser and uploads it, measuring the bytes that actually leave your device.

Each speed is calculated with the same simple formula that every network speed test uses:

Mbps = bytes transferred × 8 ÷ seconds ÷ 1,000,000

The first second of each phase is excluded from the result because connections need a moment to reach full speed, and multiple parallel streams are used so that fast fibre and gigabit lines can be measured correctly. The whole internet speed checker takes roughly fifteen seconds.

What Is a Good Internet Speed?

A good speed depends entirely on what you do online and how many people share the connection. The table below is a practical guide to the download speed each activity needs. If several people use the internet at once, add the requirements together.

As a rule of thumb, 25 Mbps suits one or two light users, 100 Mbps comfortably covers a family that streams and works from home, and anything above 300 Mbps is mainly useful for very large households or frequent large downloads. For gaming and calls, a low and stable ping matters more than a big download number.

Understanding Your Speed Test Results

Download Speed

Download speed, measured in megabits per second, is how much data your connection can pull in each second. It governs streaming quality, how fast web pages appear and how long large files take to arrive. Remember that megabits are not megabytes: divide by eight to get the file-transfer figure your download manager shows, so 100 Mbps is about 12.5 MB per second at best.

Upload Speed

Upload speed is the reverse direction: data leaving your device. Many cable and DSL plans are asymmetric, giving you far less upload than download, which is why a connection that streams 4K perfectly can still produce a blurry picture for the people on your video call. An upload speed test result of 10 Mbps or more is comfortable for most home offices.

Ping

Ping, or latency, is the round-trip delay in milliseconds. A ping test result under 30 ms feels instant, 30–60 ms is good, and above 100 ms you start to notice lag in games and a slight awkwardness in conversation on calls. Satellite links and congested mobile networks often show several hundred milliseconds.

This test times a complete HTTP round trip to the test server and reports the fastest one, after subtracting the processing time the server reports for itself. That is a realistic figure for how quickly a real web request comes back, and it reads slightly higher than a raw network ping to the same address, which does no work at the far end.

Jitter

Jitter is the variation between consecutive ping measurements. A connection with 20 ms ping and 2 ms jitter is steady; one with 20 ms ping and 40 ms jitter is erratic and will cause audio to break up even though the average looks fine. Keeping jitter below about 20 ms is the goal for calls and gaming.

Why Is My Wi-Fi Slow?

If your Wi-Fi test result is far below the speed you pay for, the bottleneck is usually between your router and your device rather than out on the internet. These are the common causes:

  • Distance from the router. Wi-Fi signal strength falls sharply with distance, and speed falls with it. Two rooms away can easily halve your throughput.
  • Router placement. Routers hidden in cupboards, behind televisions, on the floor or next to metal and water pipes lose a large part of their range. A central, elevated, open position works best.
  • Wi-Fi interference. Neighboring networks, microwaves, cordless phones, baby monitors and Bluetooth devices all compete for the same airspace, especially on 2.4 GHz.
  • Too many connected devices. Every device shares the same airtime. Phones, laptops, TVs, consoles, cameras and smart-home gadgets add up quickly.
  • Old router hardware. A router built for Wi-Fi 4 or early Wi-Fi 5 simply cannot deliver the speeds a modern gigabit plan offers, no matter how strong the signal is.
  • ISP congestion. Your local network segment is shared with other subscribers, so evening peak hours can reduce the speed available to everyone in the area.
  • VPN usage. A VPN encrypts traffic and routes it through a distant server, which typically costs you both speed and latency.
  • The wrong band. Staying on 2.4 GHz when your device could use 5 GHz or 6 GHz leaves most of your available speed unused.

2.4 GHz vs 5 GHz vs 6 GHz

The 2.4 GHz band travels furthest and passes through walls best, but it is crowded and slow. The 5 GHz band is much faster and far less congested, at the cost of shorter range. The 6 GHz band, available on Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 equipment, is faster still and almost empty today, but its range is the shortest of the three. In practice: use 6 GHz or 5 GHz in the same room or nearby, and fall back to 2.4 GHz only at the edges of your home.

How to Improve Wi-Fi Speed

Most Wi-Fi problems can be fixed in an afternoon without buying a faster plan. Work through these in order, and run this wifi speed test after each change so you can see what actually helped:

  • Move the router. Put it central, high up and out in the open, away from metal, mirrors, aquariums and thick masonry.
  • Connect to the right band. Join the 5 GHz or 6 GHz network on devices that are near the router and keep 2.4 GHz for distant or low-bandwidth devices.
  • Change the Wi-Fi channel. If neighboring networks crowd your channel, switching to a quieter one (or letting the router choose automatically after a reboot) can help immediately.
  • Restart and update. Reboot the router occasionally and keep its firmware current. Updates often fix throughput and stability bugs.
  • Reduce the load. Pause large downloads, cloud syncs and console updates while you need the bandwidth elsewhere.
  • Upgrade old equipment. A Wi-Fi 6 router or a mesh system pays for itself in a large home or one with thick walls; a single mesh node placed halfway to a dead spot often works better than any repeater.
  • Use a cable where it matters. Desktops, consoles and TVs benefit enormously from Ethernet, and taking them off Wi-Fi frees up airtime for everything else.
  • Turn off the VPN when you do not need it, and test again to see how much it was costing you.
  • Secure your network. Use WPA2 or WPA3 with a strong password so nobody else is sharing your bandwidth.

Wi-Fi Speed vs Internet Speed

These two numbers are often confused, but they measure different things. Internet speed is what your provider delivers to your router over fibre, cable, DSL or mobile. Wi-Fi speed is what the wireless link between your router and your device can carry. A speed test run over Wi-Fi shows the slower of the two, because the connection is only as fast as its weakest link.

That is why a 500 Mbps plan can produce a 60 Mbps result in an upstairs bedroom: the internet connection is fine, but the Wi-Fi link is the bottleneck. To tell them apart, run this broadband speed test twice: once over Wi-Fi in your usual spot, and once on a device plugged directly into the router with an Ethernet cable. If the wired result is close to your plan, your internet service is healthy and your Wi-Fi coverage needs attention. If the wired result is also low, the problem is with the line or your provider, and it is worth getting in touch with them.

For a representative picture, run it two or three times from the spot where you normally use the internet.

For most homes, 50 to 100 Mbps download is comfortable for HD and 4K streaming, video calls and several connected devices. Around 25 Mbps is enough for one or two people, while 200 Mbps and above suits large households and home offices that move big files. Ping below 50 ms and jitter below 20 ms matter just as much as raw speed for calls and gaming.

Advertised broadband speeds are usually "up to" figures measured at the router in ideal conditions. Wi-Fi losses, older hardware, congestion at peak times, VPNs and the distance between your device and the router all reduce what actually reaches you. Testing on a device plugged into the router with an Ethernet cable is the fairest way to compare against your plan.

Under 30 ms is excellent and feels instant. Between 30 and 60 ms is good for everything including online gaming, and 60 to 100 ms is fine for browsing, streaming and video calls. Above 150 ms you will notice lag in games and hesitation in conversations.

Mbps means megabits per second, the standard unit for connection speed. It is not the same as MB/s, megabytes per second: eight megabits make one megabyte, so a 100 Mbps connection downloads at roughly 12.5 MB per second at best.

Yes. A speed test has to move real data to measure your connection, so it typically uses between roughly 50 MB and several hundred MB depending on how fast your line is. The faster the connection, the more data the test transfers. On a metered or mobile plan, run it sparingly.

Wi-Fi interference from neighboring homes usually peaks at the same time, which makes the drop feel larger.

The test measures real data transfers between your browser and the test server, so it reflects what your device genuinely achieves at that moment. Results still depend on the distance to the server, your Wi-Fi adapter, other activity on the network and browser overhead, so treat any single run as a reliable snapshot rather than a laboratory measurement.
